Perennial shrubs, evergreen to deciduous, rhizomatous. Stems monomorphic. Leaves pinnately compound; Leaflet blades thin and flexible; surfaces abaxially glossy, smooth, adaxially glossy, green; terminal leaflet stalked, leaflet blades lance-ovate, margin toothed, acute. 30 to 60 flowers in racemes, flowers pedicellate, bisexual,showy, radially symmetric, bracteolate; nectary present; stamens 6; ovary superior; Placentation marginal or basal; Style present, sometimes persistent in fruit as beak. Fruits berries, arillate. endosperm abundant, small.

Medicinal use :-
- Berberis Aquifolium is an excellent remedy for pimples and acne.
- It is useful for scaly eczema of the scalp, acne, blotches and pimples of the face, and dry, rough and scaly skin.
- Eruptions on the scalp extend to the face and neck. It is a very useful remedy for psoriasis, acne, dry eczema and itching of the skin.
